Leadership

Appirio has assembled a leadership team of "reformed" enterprise software executives with experience at Borland, SAP, webMethods, CollabNet, and NetSuite, among others:

CEO - Chris Barbin

cb Chris has been CEO of Appirio since early 2007, guiding it to become one of the leaders in cloud computing. In 2008, InformationWeek hailed Appirio as "One of the Top 20 Cloud Computing Startups You Should Know" and Cloud Computing Journal featured Appirio as one of the "Top 100 Cloud Computing Companies in the World." Chris brings extensive operations, consulting, professional and technical experience to Appirio, helping grow year over year company revenue by more than 500 percent and assisting hundreds of enterprises like Dolby Labs, Flextronics, Genentech and Qualcomm to accelerate their path to cloud.

Previously Chris served as CIO and SVP of business operations at Borland Software, where he pioneered the company’s move to an on-demand IT applications architecture. It was in this role that Chris realized the early benefits and game changing potential of cloud computing. This experience led him and three other "reformed enterprise software executives" to create Appirio - a products and professional services company dedicated to accelerating the adoption of on-demand in enterprises.

Before becoming Borland’s CIO, Chris also served as the company’s SVP of worldwide services, managing and growing the company’s global consulting, education, and technical support organizations (organic and acquisition growth) by 45 percent between 2004 and 2006.

Prior to this, Chris was SVP of global customer services at webMethods, where he managed a team delivering services to over 1,000 customers running mission-critical integration applications. Chris also served as managing director of W.W. Grainger's Consulting Services division, an early pioneer in e-commerce.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine and also studied at the University of Sussex in Brighton, England.

Marketing and Products - Narinder Singh

nsAs Chief Marketing Officer and head of products at Appirio, Narinder is responsible for overseeing the company's marketing, communication and product strategy. He brings more than 15 years of experience on the cutting edge of software and business innovation to Appirio, and plays a key role in keeping Appirio at the forefront of cloud computing.

Prior to Appirio, Narinder worked at SAP in the Office of the CEO as a part of the Corporate Strategy Group. Working with the management board and other executives, Narinder led initiatives on sales, maintenance and competitive strategies, as well as potential business and technology disruptions, including software on demand.

Prior to SAP, Narinder managed R&D, sales and marketing activity as vice president and general manager of webMethods (WEBM) workflow business unit. Narinder previously led R&D for the company's business process management (BPM), workflow, B2B and industry products. He joined webMethods in 1998 as one of its first forty employees, and subsequently founded webMethods' Trading Networks product, the most successful add-on product in the company's history.

Narinder began his career with Accenture at its Center for Strategic Technology working on leading edge initiatives for Fortune 500 companies. He pioneered early efforts to internet-enable business applications(SAP and Peoplesoft) at companies such as Motorola, Bell Atlantic and Autodesk.

He holds a Bachelor of Science from Northwestern University and an MBA from the Wharton School.

Worldwide Sales - Dave Orrico

Dave OrricoDave Orrico is responsible for worldwide sales at Appirio, guiding the company's strong enterprise growth and managing its international expansion. He brings more than 20 years of experience in enterprise software, and plays a critical part in help customers chart a successful and more cost effective path to the cloud. In his career, Dave has helped shape enterprise sales teams at salesforce.com, Seibel and Oracle, and brings extensive knowledge about the SaaS market. He has a deep understanding of what customers need to be successful in this space, and how products and professional services come together to play a role in this.

Prior to Appirio, Dave spent five years at salesforce.com, where he was responsible for running U.S. operations, which included field sales, inside sales, alliances and professional services. In this role he was also responsible for forming the company's vertical strategy, and nurturing business relationships with eight of salesforce.com's top 10 customers. During this tenure, Dave played a pivotal role in growing salesforce.com to over a billion dollars in revenue.

Before joining salesforce.com, Dave spent seven years at Siebel Systems where he was hired to run their Eastern Operations. Here he also led the company's vertical sales and strategy for financial services, life sciences and consumer goods in the Americas. Dave also held a variety of sales and management positions at Oracle over a seven year period, prior to joining Seibel. He began his career in sales at ADP.

He holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Finance and Business Administration from Georgetown University.

Solution Delivery - Glenn Weinstein

gwGlenn Weinstein is responsible for Appirio's delivery of consulting and support services.

Prior to Appirio, Glenn ran large consulting and technical support teams at enterprise software companies, most recently as vice president for worldwide technical support and services at Borland Software Corporation, with responsibility for all maintenance revenue, as well as 24x7 global support operations for over 5,000 customers.

Glenn also was vice president of global customer support for webMethods, responsible for supporting many Fortune 500 customers' mission-critical operations.

Glenn's other past roles have included technical consulting and project management engagements for Artesia Technologies, where he implemented digital asset management (DAM) software for customers, and Lockheed Martin's Integrated Business Solutions (IBS) group, where he was design and development team lead for enterprise custom application development, as well as a certified object oriented analysis & design (OOAD) course instructor.

Glenn's professional career began with 8 years of service as a naval flight officer in the U.S. Navy, qualifying as a Mission Commander and Tactical Coordinator for the P-3C Orion anti-submarine and surveillance aircraft. Glenn holds a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from the U.S. Naval Academy, and a Master of Science degree in computer science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Financial Operations - Jim Emerich

Jim EmerichAs Appirio's Chief Financial Officer, Jim is responsible for overseeing all financial operations for the company. He brings to Appirio more than 18 years of finance and accounting experience from various high growth companies, including salesforce.com where he played a key role in helping it become the first enterprise cloud computing company to reach one billion dollars in revenue.

Jim joined Appirio from MuleSource, a leading provider of open source service-oriented (SOA) infrastructure software, where he was Chief Financial Officer. Prior to MuleSource, he spent six years at salesforce.com where he held multiple roles including Senior Vice President of Internal Audit, Chief Accounting Officer, Interim Chief Financial Officer and head of the company's Tax and Treasury departments. Prior to salesforce.com, Jim held leadership roles in finance and accounting for various high tech and manufacturing companies.

Jim is a graduate of Principia College where he earned a B.A. degree in Business Administration, Chemistry and Economics. He is also a graduate of the General Electric's Financial Management Program.

Operations - Michael O'Brien

mo Mike O'Brien is responsible for all operations at Appirio and plays a leading role in Appirio's Google Enterprise practice, which helps to accelerate the adoption of Google Apps at medium and large enterprises. He brings over 15 years of experience leading large enterprise software deployments that involve complex business requirements for global businesses.

Having focused much of his career delivering professional services for traditional software companies, Mike has a deep understanding of the challenges that come along with supporting on-premise solutions and the promise that on-demand offers.

Before joining Appirio, Mike served as Borland Software's vice president of professional services for the Americas, where he led the global deployment of a 20,000 seat implementation at EDS. Prior to that, he was vice president for professional services at webMethods, where he oversaw a team of 50 consultants working on global implementations at government agencies and commercial enterprises such as Bank of America, Eastman Chemical and Dell. This experience included early exposure to the advantages of Software as a Service (SaaS).

Previously, Mike was a senior consultant at WaveFront Consulting. He started his career as a certified U.S. Navy engineer, directing ship and reactor plant operations and training on a nuclear-powered submarine.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the U.S. Naval Academy.

Team Building and Retention - Jennifer Taylor

Jennifer TaylorAs head of human resources at Appirio, Jennifer is responsible for the processes and systems that ensure Appirio attracts, develops and retains world-class talent. She leads the company's recruiting, internal development, and compensation and benefits programs and has played an integral part in growing Appirio's team both domestically and internationally.

Prior to joining Appirio, Jennifer was director of human resources at Borland Software where she directly supported worldwide field operations and marketing - a 600 person organization that spanned North America, South America, Europe and Asia Pacific. In this role, she took the lead for rolling out Borland's company-wide on-demand performance management system from Success Factors where she quickly gained an appreciation for the cost and user benefits of SaaS and cloud computing. Prior to this, she held human resources positions at BMC Software, where she was business partner to the worldwide services team, and GMAC Global Relocation Services.

Jennifer is a graduate from the University of Phoenix, where she earned a B. S. degree in Business Administration.

Cloud Strategy Consulting - Mike Epner

moAs head of Appirio's cloud strategy consulting practice, Mike helps CIOs and other enterprise executives who are trying to shift their IT and business strategies to take advantage of cloud computing. Prior to this role, Mike led Appirio's sales organization and built a team that has assisted with some of Google and salesforce.com's largest implementations. Mike has more than 20 years of leadership experience in application development, IT and executive management and brings extensive management consulting experience to Appirio's global client base.

Before joining Appirio, Mike was vice president of worldwide services at CollabNet, a provider of on-demand services to distributed application development organizations, helping them operate collaboratively to deliver systems and software. Prior to this he was vice president of worldwide services for Borland Software Corporation, a provider of application lifecycle management solutions. Mike managed Borland’s $120M consulting services, education services and technical support business, roughly 48% of Borland’s total revenues. In this role, Mike helped double Borland’s consulting services revenues providing executive sales support to close multiple seven figure engagements.

Mike joined Borland as part of its acquisition of TeraQuest Metrics, Inc., where he was CEO. He led TeraQuest’s 4-year alliance with Gartner, Inc., helping CIOs and VPs benchmark their performance against peer groups and implement strategic improvement initiatives. He has also worked in leadership roles, both as an employee and senior consultant, at Eastman Kodak, NEC, General Motors and EDS.

Corporate Development - Justin Foster

justinJustin comes to Appirio with more than 16 years of experience in the systems implementation industry. Over the course of 6 years at NetSuite, he built the first ever ERP and CRM SaaS consulting teams, driving the movement of thousands of customers into cloud computing before the term had even been coined, defining and growing the NetSuite professional services organization. During his time at NetSuite, Justin also ran the Customer Support teams, finally taking over as General Manager for NetSuite's Services division.

Prior to NetSuite, Justin earned his consulting badge during an extensive career with Cambridge Technology Partners. There, Justin implemented CRM, SFA, and ERP software for hundreds of companies ranging from small start-ups to Fortune 50 corporations. At Cambridge, he grew and managed teams of technical and business consultants to work with customers from package and technology selection all the way through system design, development, and end user adoption. His industry experience includes work in oil and gas, financial brokerage, high-tech manufacturing, software, consumer electronics, higher education, and the public sector. After leaving Cambridge, Justin founded a successful consulting firm specializing in consumables usage in the semiconductor manufacturing industry.

Justin holds a Bachelor' Degree from Boston College.

Product Management and Marketing - Ryan Nichols

jasonRyan Nichols runs product management and marketing for Appirio, and has driven the launch of Appirio's initial portfolio of products. He has over 10 years of experience bringing together business strategy and technology in the enterprise. Ryan joined Appirio from SAP's corporate strategy group, in the office of the CEO, where he led projects to define and execute SAP's product, platform, and M&A strategy.

Previously, Ryan's background spans consulting and business software. He was a management consultant for McKinsey & Company, serving over 15 leading financial services and technology clients. He led professional services for an analytics software startup, delivering inventory and pricing analytics software and services to retail and CPG clients. He was trained in product management at Intuit, where he focused on new user acquisition for QuickBooks.

Ryan holds a bachelor's degree in Economics from Williams College, and an MBA from Stanford's Graduate School of Business, where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar.

Chief Architect - Jason Ouellette

jasonJason has been inventing cutting-edge commercial software for large enterprises for the past 12 years. He recently served as a director of R&D for application products at Composite Software. There he led the development of data services for Siebel, SAP and salesforce.com, resulting in OEM relationships with Cognos and Informatica.

Prior to Composite, Jason held senior engineering and architecture positions with Informance, a manufacturing intelligence solution provider, and webMethods, a leader in integration and service-oriented architecture software. At webMethods, Jason was the third employee and invented numerous technologies that made the company the leading provider of B2B infrastructure. He helped architect the industry's first XML-based B2B server, then invented and led the development of the first B2B application for securely managing the exchange and processing of most common business document formats, such as XML and EDI, among trading partners over the Internet.

In total, Jason has led the development of over a dozen major enterprise products that are currently deployed in mission-critical production applications at thousands of enterprise accounts.

He holds a Bachelor of Science from Carnegie Mellon in Information and Decision Systems and Computer Science.

Jim Goetz is a Partner at Sequoia Capital focusing on enterprise systems, mobile software and enterprise and consumer technology enabled services investments. Jim currently serves on the board of Admob, ClearwellSystems, Dash Navigation, Data Connection, Jive Software, Palo Alto Networks and Widgetbox. Prior to joining Sequoia Capital in 2004, Jim served as a General Partner at Accel Partner where he led the investments in Entrisphere (ERIC), Peribit (JNPR), RGB, and Rhapsody (BRCD) and was part of the team responsible for BroadJump (MOTV), Timetra (ALA) and Topspin (CSCO). Earlier, Jim was a Founder of VitalSigns (LU) where he went on to serve as VP/GM of the VitalSoft division of Lucent. Prior to VitalSigns, Jim was the Vice President of Network Management for Bay Networks. Prior to Bay and Synoptics, he held various product and marketing positions at AT&T, AT&T Bell Labs, and Digital Equipment. Jim has a BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Cincinnati and an MS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.

Tim Stevens, CEO Doppelganger

Tim is a seasoned executive with extensive experience in the Internet, advertising, content, discovery, intellectual property and software industries. He has served as a senior executive officer, board member and strategic advisor at a number of private and public companies, including Inktomi Corporation, Borland Software Corporation, Fios, Inc., Bazaar Advertising Solutions, Tumri, Inc. and 3VR, Inc. Stevens holds BS degrees in both Finance and Management from the University of Oregon, and a JD degree from the University of California, Davis.

Jeff Richards, GGV Capital

Jeff Richards is a partner at GGV Capital, where his primary focus areas are on Internet, Applications Software, Mobile and Enterprise Infrastructure technologies. In addition to leading GGV’s investment in Appirio, he is actively involved in the firm's investments in Tippit and Blue Casa. Prior to GGV, Jeff was the Vice President of Digital Content Services at VeriSign, where he oversaw the company’s efforts in the Broadband Content space. Prior to VeriSign, Jeff was a co-founder and CEO of R4GS, a software and services provider acquired by VeriSign. Earlier in his career, Jeff was a management consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he led technology, banking and consumer products engagements in the US and Asia Pacific. Jeff graduated from Dartmouth College and serves on the Board of the First Tee of the Tri Valley. He is also active with several other nonprofits in the greater Bay Area.
